Stromal tumors arising from the GI tract were initially classified as smooth muscle neoplasms including leiomyomas (5), leiomyoblastomas or sarcomas (6), following description by Stout and colleagues in 1940 (7). These descriptions were widely used until the 1970s when electron microscope found little evidence of the smooth muscle origin of these tumors (8,9). He had no history of trauma and no recent changes in medication within the last 3 months. She reported that he had been living with her in the family home, maintained at normal ambient temperatures, with no environmental exposures. It was approved prospectively by both the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) Research Ethics Committee, and Liverpool Research and Ethics Committee (LREC). Also, a data protection approval and an honorary research contract with Liverpool Royal University and Broadgreen Hospitals NHS Trust (RLBUHT) were obtained after gaining the ethics approval, to enable investigator access to patients’ specific data within the hospital environment. confidence interval of 95%, and case: control ratio of 1:2, a total number of 222 samples including 74 cases and 148 controls were calculated to be required for the study.
